At 21 metres tall, perched on the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Cape Schanck Lighthouse remains a living relic of the past. It’s one of the few lighthouses in Australia that still operates much as it did in the 1800s, its light steadfastly guiding sailors through treacherous waters. Cape Schanck is revered as the most authentic and intact light station in the country, its beam shining from a "first order lens"—the largest lens size for ocean lights, crafted by Chance Brothers in Birmingham in 1858 and installed here the following year. The lighthouse’s powerful beam still stretches 27 nautical miles out to sea—48 kilometres in layman’s terms—its 1000kw globe sitting in its original mercury bath, just as it did over a century ago.
