Cape Otway Lighthouse Suburban Icon Poster

from A$50.00

Cape Otway Lighthouse, the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia, stands as a sentinel of history and hope along the Great Ocean Road. For generations, this iconic beacon has drawn visitors, each captivated by the lighthouse's storied past and the tragic beauty of the shipwreck coast that surrounds it.

Built in 1848, perched 90 metres above the untamed waters of Bass Strait, the lighthouse was aptly named the ‘Beacon of Hope’. It was a response to the countless lives lost in the treacherous seas below—a promise that no more souls would be claimed by these unforgiving waters. The lightkeepers, tasked with maintaining this guiding light, took on a sacred duty. The Head Lightkeeper would ignite the beacon at sunset, watching over it until 10pm, before passing the responsibility to his assistants, who kept vigil until sunrise. Their days were filled with rugged chores: collecting firewood, hauling supplies across rough terrain, tending to the vegetable garden, and ensuring the lighthouse remained a steadfast guide.

For thousands of 19th-century migrants, after months adrift at sea, Cape Otway was the first glimpse of Australia—their first sight of land after leaving behind Europe, Asia, or North America. This lighthouse was their welcoming light, a symbol of safety and new beginnings.

Today, Cape Otway Lighthouse stands as an enduring icon, a monument to the resilience of those who built it and the hope it still represents. At Suburban Icons, we are proud to honour this timeless ‘Beacon of Hope’ with our tribute to its lasting legacy.
