Spotswood Pumping Station Suburban Icon Poster

from A$50.00

In the 1830s, as Melbourne grew, it lacked a modern sewage system. Waste from homes, abattoirs, and factories flowed into open drains, contaminating drinking water and spreading disease. The 1850s gold rush brought wealth and a massive population, worsening the waste issue. Melbourne's nickname "Marvellous Melbourne" turned to the derogatory "Marvellous Smellbourne" due to the foul odors.

To address this, a Royal Commission was formed, and in 1891, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works established the first sewage pumping station in Spotswood. This innovation allowed sewage to be collected citywide and pumped to treatment facilities in Werribee.

Construction of the Spotswood Pumping Station began in 1895, taking almost two years to complete. For nearly seven decades, it managed Melbourne's sewage until its closure in 1965.

This iconic building appeared in films like "Mad Max" and "Spotswood," starring Anthony Hopkins. In 1992, the site became Scienceworks, preserving a significant part of Melbourne's history.

Here at Suburban Icons Posters, we pay homage to this significant chapter in Melbourne's sanitation history with our exquisite poster. We recommend adorning your living space with this ode to the battle against unpleasant odours—perfectly situated near your water tap or dunny.
