Manchester Unity Building 1932 Suburban Icon Poster
Melbourne’s iconic Manchester Unity Building is a rare and striking blend of art, science, culture, and commerce. A true monument to human endeavour, this magnificent structure holds a special place in Melbourne’s rich history and fortunes.
Completed in 1932 on the bustling corner of Swanston and Collins Streets, this gothic, art deco masterpiece became the new headquarters of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). This non-profit friendly society, with its noble motto ‘Friendship, Love and Truth’, entrusted renowned Melbourne architect Marcus Barlow with the design. Barlow took inspiration from the 1927 Chicago Tribune Building in the United States, with W.E. Cooper Pty Ltd handling the construction.
The decision to build new headquarters wasn’t just about marketing the Manchester Unity Order or attracting new members; it was also a bold, forward-thinking move aimed at reinvigorating a city weighed down by economic depression.
Today, the Manchester Unity Building stands as an enduring architectural marvel and a Melbourne icon — a perfect addition to our Suburban Icons print collection!
