Aussie Classic Mr Whippy Suburban Icon Poster

from A$50.00

It starts as a distant melody, a faint chime on the breeze, but as it draws closer, the excitement builds: “Listen… quick. It’s Mr Whippy!”

Parents frantically rummage through pockets for loose change, muttering under their breath, while children bounce impatiently at the door. Out on the street, a line begins to form as eager kids wait for their turn at the van window, their eyes wide with anticipation. They ask for ‘Choc Dips’ and ‘Single Flakes,’ ‘Sherbets’ and ‘Choc Nuts,’ each name a small thrill. The familiar tune of “Greensleeves” drifts through the air, conjuring up memories of long, sun-drenched days, the laughter of friends, and that all-important plea: “Mum, can we have ice cream?”

Mr Whippy was more than just a name—it was an Australian summer institution. The original Mr Whippy company began its journey in Sydney in October 1962, quickly becoming a beloved fixture in capital cities and towns across the nation. Over 200 Commer Karrier vans, with their iconic pink and white stripes, were imported in the early 1960s, but only a precious few of these nostalgic treasures remain today.

Like the Pied Piper, Mr Whippy’s jaunty jingle lured children from every corner of the suburbs, and within two and a half years, the fleet had grown to over two hundred vans, generating a staggering £1.4 million in profit. The sight and sound of that cheerful van remains etched in the memories of countless Australians, a symbol of childhood summers that never seemed to end.

No memory of summer and ice cream is complete without Mr Whippy, and at Suburban Icons, our childhood memories couldn’t agree more. So grab a cool cone and one of our posters, and let the summertime sun bring those sweet childhood memories rushing back.

This artwork is available in A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, as well as the ever popular Postcard. Professional framing is available on A0, A1 and A2 sizes via pick up only.
